  • Under an hour south of Chiang Mai by motorbike, and an easy half-day loop
  • River beach for swimming, easy bouldering, and walking tracks through the gorge
  • Campsite with a cafe doing cold drinks; 200 THB entry and quiet on weekdays

Ob Khan National Park sits less than an hour south of Chiang Mai, so when I found myself with a free day and a hired motorbike, it was an easy call. The park turned out to be a quiet stretch of river, forest and walking tracks, popular with local families and refreshingly light on tourists.

Here’s what I found on the ride out there.

The Journey: Riding Out to Ob Khan National Park #

The adventure began with the motorbike ride, itself a fantatsic experience when exploring this part of northern Thailand. Renting a motorbike in Chiang Mai is easy and affordable (around 200-300 THB per day), and it gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. The ride to Ob Khan National Park took me about 45 minutes, weaving through scenic countryside roads lined with rice fields, small villages, and distant mountains.

As I approached the park, the air grew cooler, and the surroundings became more verdant. The journey was as much a part of the experience as the destination itself: there’s a lot to be said for the wind on your face and Thailand’s northern backroads rolling past.

Highlights of Ob Khan National Park #

1. A Peaceful Campsite and Cozy Cafe #

One of the first things I noticed upon arriving was the campsite, tucked away in a quiet corner of the park. It’s perfect for those who want to immerse themselves in nature overnight. While I didn’t camp this time, I could see families and groups setting up tents and enjoying the tranquil atmosphere.

Nearby, there’s a small cafe that serves simple yet satisfying drinks and snacks. After my motorbike ride, I stopped here for an iced tea, while soaking in views of the surrounding greenery and river rapids. The cafe is a great spot to relax before diving into the park’s activities.

2. River Beach: A Family-Friendly Escape #

Ob Khan National Park features a delightful river beach, where families were picnicking and children (and chidren at heart) splashed happily in the shallow waters. The sandy banks and clear river make it an ideal spot for cooling off on a warm day. If you’re travelling with little ones, this area will keep them busy for hours.

3. Scenic Hike Along the River #

For those who love exploring on foot, Ob Khan offers a short hike along the river, which winds through picturesque cliffs and lush vegetation. The trail is well-marked but not overly strenuous, making it accessible even for casual hikers.

Walking along the riverbank, I marveled at how untouched and pristine everything felt, and the sound of flowing water combined with birdsong created an almost meditative atmosphere. Along the way, there are several spots where you can stop to take photos or simply admire the beauty around you.

4. Bouldering Over Rocks and Cliffs #

One of my favorite parts of the trip was bouldering over the rocks near the river. It’s an easy scramble if you’re moderately fit, and the higher vantage points open up views of the cliffs where a bridge once stood long ago.

This area feels like an adventurer’s playground; whether you’re climbing rocks or simply sitting atop one to enjoy the view, it’s impossible not to feel connected to nature here.

Practical Tips for Visiting Ob Khan National Park #

  • Getting There: Ob Khan National Park is located about 30 kilometers southwest of Chiang Mai city center . Renting a motorbike is highly recommended for flexibility, but you can also arrange private transportation or join a tour group if preferred.

  • What to Bring: Comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, insect repellent, water bottles, and snacks (although there’s a cafe on-site). If you plan to camp, bring your own gear or check if rentals are available locally.

  • Best Time to Visit: Early mornings or late afternoons are ideal for cooler temperatures and fewer crowds.

Why You Should Visit Ob Khan National Park #

Ob Khan is an easy day out that packs in a decent ride, a swim and a wander. Bouldering over the rocks, walking the trails, or working through the menu at the campsite cafe, it’s a proper escape from the city.

For me personally, this trip was a reminder of how rejuvenating it can be to step away from urban hustle and reconnect with nature, even if only for a day.

If you’re planning a visit to Chiang Mai and looking for something off-the-beaten-path yet accessible, make sure Ob Khan National Park is on your list! It’s an incredible spot that will leave you refreshed and inspired.
